Heavy Stones & High Stakes: The 2026 National Highlander Championships at Saltire Estate

The 2026 Hunter Valley Highland Games at Saltire Estate are set to showcase the National Highlander Championships, a grand celebration of Scottish heritage through a series of traditional athletic and cultural events. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Lovedale’s vineyards, this spectacular event offers a unique blend of strength, skill, and cultural festivities.

This year, we are shaking things up with a brand-new event layout designed to maximize the fun and bring everyone closer to the energy. We’ve completely reimagined the flow of the festival grounds to create a more vibrant, connected atmosphere, bringing our spectators right up to the edge of the action so you can feel every bit of the thunderous excitement.

Athletic Events:

  • Open Stone Put: Athletes demonstrate incredible power and technique by throwing a heavy stone as far as possible, reminiscent of the ancient shot put.

  • Husafell Stone Carry: Competitors lift and carry a massive stone over a set distance, testing their endurance and grip strength to the absolute limit.

  • Caber Toss: Perhaps the most iconic event of all, participants flip a large, tapered log end over end, aiming for a perfect, straight-line vertical landing.

  • Natural Stones of Strength: A true test of raw, unyielding power, athletes lift and maneuver irregularly shaped stones, challenging their strength and balance.

  • Keg Toss: Participants hurl a heavily weighted keg over a high bar, combining explosive strength and precision in this massive crowd-pleasing event.

Cultural Highlights:

  • Highland Fling: Dancers perform this traditional solo dance, showcasing exceptional agility and grace in a vibrant display of Scottish culture.

  • Jacobyte History Display: An engaging exhibit that brings Scottish history to life, offering fascinating insights into the rich heritage of the Highlands.

  • Highland Cows: These gentle, shaggy-haired cattle are a favorite among attendees, providing a touch of authentic rustic charm to the festival grounds.

  • Kids Play Area: A dedicated space for younger visitors to enjoy games and activities, ensuring an easy, fun-filled day out for the whole family.
