Preparing for the Highland Games: Training, Diet, and Essential Gear

Athletes preparing for the Highland Games, a time-honoured Scottish tradition, follow intense training programs to achieve peak performance. Strength training is a primary focus, involving heavy compound exercises and explosive, powerful drills for full-body conditioning. To master accuracy and technique, competitors practice with lighter weights and smaller objects, like shorter cabers, allowing them to perfect their throwing form and coordination. Flexibility, agility, and mobility are essential to handle various events, so athletes incorporate regular stretching before and after training, as well as focusing on drills that improve range of motion. For endurance, HIIT sessions and cardio exercises improve stamina and durability, critical for completing multiple events in one day.

Diet plays an equally vital role. Before the Games, athletes eat a light, carb-and-protein-rich meal to fuel their performance. During the event, they snack on quick energy sources like sandwiches and fruit. Post-event recovery includes a protein-heavy meal, paired with a small treat to replenish and reward.
